Yatate Hajime: The bridge where writing began

Yatate Hajime means the beginning of writing, and is where Basho’s first haikus were written, under the bridge constructed by Date Masamune, “spring passing; the birds cry out and the eyes of the fish are filled with tears”. Legend has it the bridge withstood over three centuries, as one hero with a sword ends, another on paper begins.
